With the opening of the MEININGER Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket on 5 August, MEININGER Hotels entered the Scottish market. The hotel, located in Edinburgh's West End, represents the 38th property in the company's portfolio and signals its continued expansion into strategic urban markets across Europe. The project involved the redesign of a former 1970s office building, which was revitalised after several years of vacancy and extended with an annexe. The development was carried out by S Harrison, while the implementation was the responsibility of Ogilvie Construction. The hotel has 157 rooms and 549 beds.

Ajit Menon, CEO of MEININGER Hotels, stated that the Edinburgh location was a logical next step for the brand. He emphasised that the city offers stable year-round demand, good transport links and a diverse guest structure. The revitalisation of the long-vacant building, the enrichment of the local hotel offering and the support for Edinburgh's tourism economy were essential aspects of this strategy.

Location and Concept

The MEININGER Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket is situated in a well-connected location in the Haymarket district. Haymarket station is within walking distance, offering train connections within Scotland and the United Kingdom, complemented by tram connections to Edinburgh Airport and the city centre. Central attractions such as Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, and Murrayfield Stadium are easily accessible. The hotel positions itself as a starting point for visitors to major events such as the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The hybrid hotel concept combines hotel quality, privacy, and service with the flexibility and social atmosphere of a hostel. Various accommodation options are offered, from private single, double, and multi-bed rooms to individually bookable beds. Shared communal areas such as a guest kitchen, a bar, lounge areas, a breakfast room, and an outdoor terrace complement the offering. The concept is tailored to diverse travel needs and appeals to families, groups, backpackers, and business travellers.

Expansion Strategy and Team Building

The opening in Edinburgh is part of MEININGER's expansion strategy and follows other projects in Europe, including Barcelona, Strasbourg, Madrid, Porto, and Tel Aviv. The company now operates a total of 38 hotels in 27 European cities. Menon explained that the strategy is based on sustainable, long-term growth. Investments are specifically made in destinations with long-term potential where the hybrid concept offers added value. Edinburgh represents an important chapter in future growth plans, with the UK and Ireland expected to play an increasing role, including another opening in Dublin in 2028.

An international team of approximately 20 employees has been assembled for the operation of the MEININGER Hotel Edinburgh Haymarket. Will Harrington, the hotel manager, emphasised the importance of a collaborative and diverse team culture, which should contribute to a positive guest experience. The hotel aims to become part of the local community.
