The digital housing exchange of the City of Munich has received the “Proven-on-Site Seal 2026” from the German Association of Cities and Municipalities and its cooperation partners. This award recognises communal solutions that have proven themselves in practice and have the potential for transferability to other locations. The platform enables tenants to offer their existing flats for exchange and to find suitable exchange partners.
Gerhard Mayer, Head of the Office for Housing and Migration, accepted the award on 16 September during a ceremony at the Leipzig Exhibition Centre. The application for the seal was submitted by Tauschwohnung GmbH, which is responsible as a service provider for the development and support of the housing exchange on behalf of the City of Munich. The award underlines the relevance of digital initiatives in addressing the challenges of the housing market.
Strategic Relevance and Expansion of the Offering
Mayor Verena Dietl emphasised that flat exchanges create new opportunities for participants and contribute to the efficient use of living space in the city. Given the current housing situation, this is urgently needed. She expressed her delight at the platform's recognition as a pioneering communal solution that is attracting attention beyond the city limits, and thanked all involved for their commitment.
Since its introduction in 2023, the housing exchange initially only included privately financed flats. In July 2026, the offering was significantly expanded to include subsidised flats from Münchner Wohnen GmbH. The aim is to promote flat exchanges across all age groups through cooperation with neighbourhood facilities and counselling centres. Additionally, discussions are being held with large private housing associations to intensify flat exchanges in the private rental market as well.
Functionality and User Numbers
A flat exchange is realised once two exchange partners have successfully found each other and the respective landlord agrees to the exchange. The platform currently has a good 4,800 registered users. So far, 196 successful flat exchanges have been facilitated through the exchange, demonstrating the practical effectiveness of the instrument.
