The Schwabinger Tor in Munich has expanded its gastronomic offerings. Last Thursday saw the opening of the “Schwabinger Tor Bräu” at Leopoldstraße 174. This new traditional pub aims to establish a meeting point for residents, workers, and visitors to the district, strengthening the community-oriented approach of the quarter. The opening fits into the overall concept of Schwabinger Tor, which was developed by the Jost Hurler Group.
The Jost Hurler Group designed Schwabinger Tor with the goal of harmonising living, working, gastronomy, and culture, and fostering interaction among various groups of people. The idea of “sharing” is an integral part of the concept, manifesting itself in car-sharing options and co-working spaces, among other things. A dedicated app facilitates internal communication within the quarter. With the “Schwabinger Tor Bräu,” this communal idea is now complemented by a traditional Bavarian pub culture, which has always been considered a place for people to gather.
Dr. Maximilian Gutsche, Managing Director of the Jost Hurler Group, stated that a quarter is characterised by continuous development and the creation of new meeting places. He described the “Schwabinger Tor Bräu” as a fitting addition. Management by the “Andaz München” ensures high standards of hospitality and culinary quality. The pub's name deliberately emphasises its embedding in the quarter, with the aim of establishing a permanent meeting point.
Historical Connection and Brewing Art
With the opening of the “Schwabinger Tor Bräu,” the art of brewing returns to Schwabing after 107 years. The “Schwabinger Bräu” was previously the last local brewery. Under the direction of master brewer Valentin Schöttke, the varieties “Schwabinger Gold” (Helles lager) and “Schwabinger Blau-Weiße” (wheat beer) are produced in nine fermentation and storage tanks. The offering is supplemented by seasonal specialities such as Pale Ale, Red Ale, or Märzen. All beers bear a direct reference to the location in their names. The brewery is designed for an annual production volume of up to 100,000 litres. The beers are neither filtered nor pasteurised and are free of preservatives.
Gastronomic Concept and Offerings
The pub features 84 indoor seats and an additional 128 terrace seats, weather permitting. Opening hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 16:00 to 23:30. The menu includes classic Bavarian pub dishes such as snacks, sausages, spinach dumplings, braised veal shoulder, and steamed yeast dumplings. The team, led by pub manager and beer sommelier Johannes Egger and head chef Filippo Zuccagnoli, values sustainable relationships with local producers and organically certified products. In addition to the gastronomic offerings, brewery tours, tastings, and a regular regulars' table with the master brewer are provided.
The beers produced are also available in other gastronomic establishments of the “Andaz München,” including “The Lonely Broccoli,” the Lounge Bar, and the “M’Uniqo Rooftopbar.” For off-premise sales, the bottled beers are offered daily from 8:00 to 17:00 in the “Bicicletta” coffee shop.
