LBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. - A proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2026 could bring increased funding for education and public safety in Albemarle County, along with higher taxes. The county's real property tax rate may rise by four cents to $0.894 per $100 of assessed value, a move that would generate more revenue.
County Executive Jeff Richardson explained that the majority of this increase - 3.2 cents - would go towards public safety, covering expenses such as fire and police services, infrastructure investments, and personnel costs. The county has already hired 57 additional firefighters through FEMA grants, but those funds are dwindling, making it necessary for the county to take on the responsibility.
The proposed budget also includes a $14.3 million increase in funding for the school division's operating budget, which would help complete three new schools and fund renovations at existing ones. Additionally, around $1.2 million would be allocated towards creating a dedicated housing initiative fund, bringing the total Affordable Housing Fund investment to $4.2 million.
The personal property tax rate is also expected to increase by 32 cents to $4.28 per $100 of valuation. However, this budget is not final and will undergo further review in upcoming work sessions, where the public can provide input on the proposed tax rates. The board is set to finalize the maximum tax rate by March 19.
