I
've finally taken the leap and started writing a book. It's something many of you have encouraged me to do for years, and I'm excited to share that it's now underway.
Some of my colleagues have chuckled knowingly and congratulated me, while others have asked what took me so long or raised an eyebrow at the idea of an "old guy" writing a book. But this isn't just any memoir or self-help book. It's a practical guide for those in commercial real estate, drawing on my 40 years of experience.
The working title is SEQUENCE: A Commercial Real Estate Success Formula – How I Became a Successful Producer and How You Can Too! This book will provide shortcuts and lessons learned the hard way, distilled into a framework that can help others succeed. The core concept revolves around the acronym SEQUENCE, which outlines key stages in the commercial real estate transaction cycle.
The book will be filled with real-life anecdotes, some triumphant and others humbling, to reinforce the lessons I've shared through seminars, columns, and client work. It will also highlight the tools and mindsets that have helped me build a successful career in this industry.
Don't expect it to hit shelves anytime soon – my goal is to finish by the end of 2025. Writing a book is like negotiating a commercial lease: there are drafts, redlines, delays, and moments where you question everything. But I'm driven by a desire to pass on what I've learned to the next generation of brokers, entrepreneurs, and business owners.
This book is my attempt to leave a lasting legacy and provide a practical toolkit for those looking to succeed in commercial real estate. If you're considering writing your own book, I say: start now. After all, that's what old guys do – or at least, it should be!
