ara Burack, a 40-year-old real estate agent for Nest Seekers International, was struck and killed by a car on a foggy morning in June. The driver, Amanda Kempton, 32, of Manorville, was arrested the next day and charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death. Kempton's lawyer claimed she believed she hit a construction cone.
Burack had appeared as a guest on the Netflix reality show "Million Dollar Beach House" in 2020, showcasing her expertise in the competitive Hamptons real estate market. However, in the months leading up to her death, Burack's life took a different turn. She was often seen carrying multiple bags or pushing a shopping cart and would frequently visit a Suffolk County government building to pay taxes on a property she did not own.
Burack filed 127 lawsuits against various corporations, including Walmart, Uber Technologies, and Whole Foods Market, alleging that they had caused her harm through manufacturing changes or falsified documents. Her family described her as "our first-born and our shining light" who was experiencing mental health issues at the time of her death.
According to Michele Guardino, a Suffolk County government employee, Burack would often confide in her about her personal struggles and would frequently visit a 24-hour gym in Southampton, sometimes sleeping there. Guardino attempted to get Burack help through Adult Protective Services but was rebuffed when two sheriffs arrived at the scene.
Burack's colleagues described her as "bubbly" and "generous," with a strong work ethic and a dedication to helping others. However, they also noted that she struggled with mental health issues and would often be disheveled or carrying multiple bags.
The Suffolk County Executive's office stated that Burack was treated with respect in interactions with the County Clerk's Office but acknowledged that her deluge of lawsuits presented a challenge to their resources. The district attorney's office declined to comment on the suits, citing a policy not to discuss ongoing litigation.
Burack's family has called for an end to "gossip and innuendo" surrounding her death, stating that she was part of a close and loving family who were overwhelmed with grief. They also emphasized that Burack's state of mind had not been linked to the accident.
