LA Landmark Apartments to Get Underground Granny Flats

Owner seeks to add eight granny flats in basement of historic L.A. apartment building.

A
historic apartment building in Los Angeles' Windsor Square is set to undergo a significant transformation. Allen Gross, the owner of the Los Altos Apartments at 4121 Wilshire Boulevard, has filed plans to add eight granny flats beneath the five-story landmark. The project, designed by Peter T. Erdelyi & Associates, aims to convert the unused basement area into homes ranging from 364 to 597 square feet.

The building, a National Register of Historic Places listing since its restoration in 1990, has hosted numerous Hollywood celebrities over the years. Gross' previous projects include converting a former Downtown department store into housing more than a decade ago. The new addition would bring the total number of homes on site to 83.

Gross plans to utilize an unspecified state law to facilitate the conversion, which is expected to be completed beneath the existing structure.
