A
rare Manhattan penthouse with a private rooftop pool and hot tub has returned to market, asking $35 million. The six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom triplex residence is perched atop 55 W. 17th St. in the Flatiron District.
Hedge-fund manager Teddy Kang and his wife Elise purchased the unit for $16.76 million in 2017 and worked with developer Toll Brothers City Living to create a sprawling penthouse, combining two and a half floors into one expansive space. The custom features include a rare rooftop pool extended to over 20 feet in length, an outdoor kitchen, and room for dining under a pergola.
The Kangs had struggled to find a developer willing to create the kind of outdoor living space they envisioned on the Upper East Side, but the Flatiron District offered the flexibility they needed. The building presented a "unique opportunity" for them to bring their vision to life.
Access across the three levels is via a dramatic spiral staircase finished in Venetian plaster and modeled after one at the Edition Hotel near Madison Square Park. The home includes expansive living and dining areas, a kitchen with hand-blown-glass cabinetry, and an office wrapped in walnut with a marble-backed bar.
The primary bedroom suite features a Grigio Collemandina marble fireplace, massive closets, and an ensuite bathroom adorned with marble and walnut. There is also a guest suite wing with its own separate entrance. Construction was completed in early 2020, just before the pandemic, and the Kangs moved in shortly after.
The family has since relocated uptown due to their eldest child's school on the Upper East Side. The listing has made multiple appearances on the market since 2022, originally asking $36 million.
