Luxury NYC Penthouse with Golden Dome Asks $25 Million After Renovation

A rare NYC gem offers a stunning amenity to a new generation at 170 Fifth Avenue.

T
ech mogul Greg Carr is parting ways with his iconic New York penthouse, a 5,000-square-foot gem atop the historic Sohmer Piano building on Fifth Avenue. The property boasts a show-stopping 40-foot gold dome and has been a hub for high-society gatherings since Carr purchased it in 2001 for $7 million.

Carr's love affair with architecture and New York City led him to this unique find, which he described as "the best" after considering other options. The penthouse features an expansive entertaining space under the dome, luxurious details like a soaking tub facing the Empire State Building, and exclusive roof access with panoramic views of Manhattan.

For nearly 25 years, Carr's golden aerie was a hotspot for artists, human rights advocates, and A-listers, including a memorable dance with Lauren Bacall under his gold dome. However, Carr's priorities have shifted as he dedicates more time to wildlife conservation efforts in Mozambique, where he has invested over $100 million.

The penthouse spans two floors of the historic building, offering four spacious bedrooms on the lower level and an open-plan living area under the dome upstairs. The property exudes old-school Manhattan luxury, with a sweeping limestone staircase and rare views of the Flatiron Building's gargoyles.

Carr has decided to sell the property, which now lists for $25 million, to focus on his global conservation efforts. Proceeds from the sale will support his ongoing work at Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique. As Carr puts it, "That was act two of my life, and it was a magnificent act."
