eal Antique Wood breathes new life into discarded structures, transforming them into unique treasures. The Irvington-based salvage company and mill shop sources materials from vintage barns, homes, boats, and other old buildings to create one-of-a-kind pieces such as reclaimed hardwood flooring, antique barn siding, custom fireplace mantels, and bespoke furniture. Founded in 2011 by Gary and Lisa Horvath, the business has dismantled over 120 barns, many of which are more than a century old.
Anthony Saraceno, a master craftsman who's been with the company since its inception, explains that sourcing materials is largely based on word of mouth. They receive tips from property owners, construction companies, and demolition contractors about structures in need of repurposing. Once identified, the team travels to the site, disassembles the structure, removes metal contaminants, sterilizes the material in their kiln, and adds it to their inventory.
Real Antique Wood's 5,000-square-foot showroom features "grab-and-go" goods like reclaimed wood, wall covering materials, live edge slabs, and premade furniture items. However, the company primarily specializes in custom projects, tailoring their process to meet clients' specific needs. Recent projects include outfitting a coffee shop with reclaimed hardwood floors and installing 16-18 reclaimed wood ceiling beams for a rustic touch in a newly built home.
Saraceno emphasizes the passion behind giving these materials a new life due to their exceptional quality and uniqueness compared to modern alternatives. He notes that there's no better feeling than creating one-of-a-kind pieces with unique stories, which is what drives the company's small, tight-knit crew of seven.
