arstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is speaking out against the proposed "Taylor Swift tax" in Rhode Island, which would target owners of luxury second homes valued at over $1 million with annual fees that could reach six figures. As a self-proclaimed "Swiftie," Portnoy expressed his disapproval during an interview on "Varney & Co."
The tax is aimed at homeowners like Taylor Swift, who owns a mansion in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, purchased for around $17 million in 2013. If the law passes, she could face an additional $136,000 in yearly taxes due to her property's high value.
Portnoy, who owns several properties across the US, including one in Nantucket, Massachusetts, joked that if his state were to implement a similar tax, he might be okay with it – as long as they named it after him. He currently has no plans to expand his real estate portfolio, saying he's content with his four homes and uses them frequently.
Portnoy also expressed concern that other states might follow Rhode Island's lead, citing his own properties in nearby areas. While he doesn't have any homes in Rhode Island, he warned against the state getting ideas from others.
