Mayor Mamdani stated at the press conference in front of Gracie Mansion that it was agreed to "establish a new level of this conversation between our housing and operations team at City Hall and the White House team". He emphasised the genuine interest and commitment to this idea, which is why it had been central to his discussions with the President.

Monday's meeting came almost seven months after Mamdani met Trump at the White House in late February, requesting USD 21 billion in federal grants to fund a platform for the housing project. The development in Sunnyside Yards is expected to comprise a total of 12,000 housing units, half of which are to be financed through New York State's Mitchell-Lama affordable housing programme. Additionally, parks and schools are planned.
The endeavour was originally proposed under the administration of then-Mayor Bill de Blasio but met with significant resistance from local residents. President Trump noted at the press conference that it was a very state-centric task. "You're going to need a lot of state approvals and probably state money for that," he said, adding: "But it was always a great location." The next steps will now focus on continuing the dialogue and clarifying the necessary federal approval procedures.
