An urban realignment is taking shape in Wiesbaden-Klarenthal. On the property of the former Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule, the state capital of Wiesbaden and GLS Bank intend to develop a cooperative residential quarter. The project transitions the former school grounds into a new phase of use, with communal living at the centre of the planning.
Transformation of the former school site
Where teaching and communal learning took place over many years, community-oriented housing is to be created in the future. The site of the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule in the Klarenthal district provides the spatial basis for this. The conversion of former educational institutions into residential quarters is gaining importance, as inner-city land potential is purposefully utilised for new forms of cohabitation.
The partnership between the City of Wiesbaden and GLS Bank forms the foundation of this scheme. GLS Bank is traditionally engaged in socially oriented and cooperative ventures. Working hand in hand with the municipal administration, conceptual design is now being driven forward to steer the Klarenthal site towards an orderly and future-proof use.
Cooperative living in Klarenthal
The cooperative ethos significantly shapes the planning direction of the venture. Rather than a purely return-driven development, the concept aims at co-determination and collectively organised living space. This approach ties into the character of the location, where learning together was firmly anchored for decades.
With the plans for the grounds of the former Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule, those involved are sending a clear signal for neighbourhood development in Klarenthal. The repurposing of the school site illustrates how existing properties can be unlocked for cooperative housing projects over the long term through collaboration between the city and the banking institution.
