Deutsche Hypo - NORD/LB Real Estate Finance is engaging in the Dutch market with large-scale financing. The banking institution is providing a financing facility of 28 million euros for the listed Muntgebouw in Utrecht. The property ranks among the city's most recognised historic landmarks and has been established on the market as a versatile commercial property following an extensive transformation process.

The architectural origins of the building date back to the renowned architect C.H. Peters. Following its completion and official opening in 1911, the structure served for over a century as the operational headquarters of the Dutch mint, where the country's coinage was struck. Owing to its outstanding architectural and cultural significance, the building has been protected as a national monument (Rijksmonument) since 2001.

From royal mint to mixed-use property

The historic building had previously undergone comprehensive refurbishment between 2005 and 2007. During that period, the property continued to serve as the production site for the national mint while also hosting the Dutch Money Museum. With the permanent cessation of coin production at the location in 2020, this historic cycle of use drew to a close, opening the door for an entirely new master concept.

Between 2023 and 2026, an extensive restoration and redesign of the ensemble followed. The works were carried out by AMSTAM on behalf of the owner and also marked the start of the collaboration between AMSTAM and the Aaron Group. Today, the revitalised Muntgebouw brings together flexible office accommodation, event and conference facilities, alongside premises for hospitality and sports. Despite the historic building fabric, the property achieves the Dutch energy label A+++.

  • —Historic identity: Designed by architect C.H. Peters, opened in 1911 and designated a protected Rijksmonument since 2001
  • —Broad spectrum of uses: Modern work environments, conference and event spaces, hospitality and sports amenities
  • —High efficiency standard: Awarded the Dutch energy label A+++

Sustainable repositioning of historic fabric

The recipients of the financing are Martin Smit and his investor group. Martijn Turenhout, Senior Director Real Estate Finance at Deutsche Hypo, highlighted that the Muntgebouw is an exceptional property combining historic depth and architectural character with contemporary operational requirements. The successful repositioning illustrates how heritage conservation and demanding building standards can be reconciled effectively.
