The book and art dealer FELIX JUD, known for its traditional presence in Hamburg and another branch in Keitum on Sylt, is opening a new establishment in Bremen. The establishment will be located in the Kontorhaus am Markt within the Balgequartier, a district characterised by its historical and architectural significance. This step is more than just a simple letting; it complements the existing or planned cultural institutions of the district, such as the Literature and Town Musicians’ House, and contributes to the consolidation of a cultural focal point on Langenstraße.
Robert Eberhardt, owner and managing director of FELIX JUD, justifies the choice of Bremen by citing the city's rich literary tradition and independent cultural scene. He emphasised that in the Balgequartier, relevant aspects such as history, architecture, literature and the ambition to create a meeting place converge, thus aligning well with FELIX JUD's philosophy. The objective is to develop a book and art shop that is both deeply connected to its surroundings and reflects the company's specific signature style.
For the Balgequartier, the arrival of FELIX JUD represents a strategically important step. Dr. Joh. Christian Jacobs, Managing Partner of the Joh. Jacobs & Co. Group and investor in the district, stated that FELIX JUD, with its focus on quality, integrity, and a personal approach to bookselling, is particularly well-suited to the development aspirations for the Balgequartier. This addition is of significant value to both the district and Bremen's city centre.
Premises and infrastructure integration
FELIX JUD will occupy a total area of approximately 225 square metres in the Kontorhaus am Markt. This includes about 85 square metres on the ground floor directly adjacent to the future welcome hall and an additional approximate 140 square metres on the upper floor. The two levels will be connected by an internal staircase. The upper area directly adjoins the planned Literature House, which underscores the synergy with other cultural institutions in the district. Direct neighbours will also include the future Town Musicians’ and Literature House, the restaurant bona’me, and design apartments from limehome.
Cultural launch with Christopher Lehmpfuhl
To mark its debut in Bremen, FELIX JUD is setting a cultural tone with an exhibition by the contemporary German painter Christopher Lehmpfuhl. The exhibition is titled “BREMEN” and will be on display from 2 to 4 October 2026, coinciding with German Unity Day, at the Stadtwaage. Lehmpfuhl, known for his plein air painting and a special technique where he works directly with his hands, has previously captured Bremen's market square in one of his works. His pieces are represented in renowned collections and have been presented in prominent locations. The exhibition is publicly accessible, and on 3 October at 13:00, Lehmpfuhl will provide insights into his work during an artist talk.
State Councillor for Culture Carmen Emigholz lauded the development in the Balgequartier and congratulated the investor Dr. Jacobs on securing such a renowned book and art dealer. She emphasised her appreciation for the commitment with which Dr. Jacobs is consistently driving the development of the Balgequartier, starting with the Johann Jacobs Haus, the Essighaus, the Stadtwaage, and the Kontorhaus, and assured continued support from the Department of Culture.
