The official foundation stone ceremony for a new residential and local supply project took place in Weinstraße, Berlin-Friedrichshain. On a plot of approximately 3,200 square metres, Kondor Wessels Bouw Berlin GmbH is constructing a new building project on behalf of STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft mbH, which will include a modern ALDI Nord branch and 69 rental flats. Completion is scheduled for the first quarter of 2028, marking an important step for the development of the quarter.

The ceremony was attended by Christian Gaebler, Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing, Natascha Klimek, Managing Director of STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft mbH, and Torsten Schmidt, Expansionist at ALDI Nord Deutschland. Following the speeches, a time capsule was jointly lowered into the foundations with the project partners, symbolising the start of construction.

Synergy of residential space and infrastructure

Marcus Becker, Managing Director of Kondor Wessels Bouw Berlin GmbH, stated that the project combines affordable housing and contemporary local amenities at one location. He emphasised its contribution to the Berlin housing market, particularly the cooperation with long-standing partner STADT UND LAND.

Senator Christian Gaebler highlighted that the project exemplifies how joint commitment can lead to success. He referred to the creation of 69 flats in a prime inner-city location, with a large proportion subject to rent and occupancy restrictions through housing construction funding. This will create a new home for over 150 Berlin citizens. The integration of a local amenities provider makes optimal use of urban space.

Natascha Klimek, Managing Director of STADT UND LAND Wohnbauten-Gesellschaft mbH, added that the project in Weinstraße provides new affordable housing in an established inner-city quarter and connects it with modern local amenities for residents. She underlined the importance of intelligent land use and considering diverse needs in densely built-up areas. The aim is to create a place that meaningfully integrates living and daily life, thus making a concrete contribution to social housing provision in Berlin.

Torsten Schmidt from ALDI Nord Deutschland affirmed that modern local amenities and urgently needed housing are not contradictory but complementary. He sees this as a significant opportunity for the development of Berlin's districts.
