Gewobag, a key player in the Berlin housing market, has received a loan commitment of 58 million euros from GLS Bank. This financing is intended to implement strategic goals in the area of climate justice and asset preservation. The agreement was recently officially sealed by Aysel Osmanoglu, Member of the Board of GLS Bank, and Markus Terboven, Member of the Board of Gewobag.
Gewobag's main goal is the climate-friendly transformation of its entire building stock by 2045. To achieve this ambitious undertaking, investments of approximately 1.4 billion euros are already planned by 2035. A key component of this strategy is the comprehensive modernisation of seven large districts, comprising a total of around 14,000 residential units.
Focus on social and ecological sustainability
Both contracting parties emphasise their shared view that properties go beyond purely return-oriented aspects. They understand properties as fundamental living spaces that are part of public services of general interest and represent indispensable social infrastructure. GLS Bank sees this financing as a form of sustainable financial management, which significantly supports the transformation of urban areas.
Ms Osmanoglu stated that GLS Bank primarily aligns its economic practices with social foundations and, in cooperation with Gewobag, aims to ensure that people have access to healthy and affordable housing. Mr Terboven added that they intend to significantly reduce the CO2 emissions of the existing stock and keep housing affordable through targeted energetic modernisations. This includes creating climate-friendly, sustainable, and future-proof living conditions in Berlin.
The cooperation between GLS Bank and Gewobag underscores a trend in the real estate sector where ecological and social criteria are increasingly integrated into financing decisions. This manifests in the development of residential districts that meet both the demands of modern living and climate protection. The provision of funds by GLS Bank is thus an example of the practical implementation of sustainable investment strategies in the field of social housing.
