The Japanese restaurant Udon Shin, known for its udon noodles and with only two other locations in the USA so far, is preparing to open its first branch in New York City. The restaurant has signed a ten-year lease for a 2,500-square-foot space at 37 West 17th Street in Manhattan's Flatiron District. This was confirmed by Aaron Gavios of Gavios Realty Group, who represented the tenant in the transaction.
The space in question, previously occupied by the now-closed Italian restaurant Basta Pasta, was listed with an asking rent of $30,000 per month. Udon Shin originated in Tokyo and recently opened its first US location in Mesa, Arizona, where demand is very high, as reported by Gavios. Another US location is soon to follow in Utah.
Expectations for the New York Location
Aaron Gavios expressed optimism regarding the New York City opening: "We expect long queues and waiting times when Udon Shin opens here in the Flatiron District. It is likely to be the next big Japanese food sensation." Expectations are correspondingly high that the concept will be very well received in Manhattan.
The landlord, the Moinian Group, was represented in this deal by Samuel Chera and David Green of KSR. David Green commented on the development: "The continued interest from exciting international restaurant concepts underscores the strength of Manhattan's retail market and the demand for prime locations. We are convinced that Udon Shin will be an excellent addition to the neighbourhood and look forward to its success."
