Iowa law mandates lead pipe disclosure in property sales

House File 876 mandates sellers disclose any lead service pipes linked to the water meter or interior plumbing.

PA warns that lead exposure can cause headaches, hearing loss in children, hypertension and brain damage in adults. Under the Lead and Copper Rule, lead or galvanized water lines must be replaced by 2037. Iowa’s new law, effective January 1, requires sellers to disclose any lead service lines in a property. House File 876 expands the standard disclosure to include lines that connect the municipal main to the building’s plumbing or to the water meter. In 2024, cities sent notices to residents about the presence of lead service lines in their neighborhoods. Now, if a homeowner with such lines decides to sell, the lead‑line information must appear in the transaction’s disclosure statement. “Knowing this helps buyers decide how to proceed, just as they would negotiate repairs for a roof issue,” said Chris Delfs, president of the Northwest Iowa Board of Realtors. Delfs added that sellers are responsible for revealing lead‑service‑pipe information; failure to do so can trigger penalties.
