omeownership comes with its fair share of lessons, and for many, regrets. A Bankrate survey found that nearly half of current homeowners have at least one regret about their purchase, citing unexpected expenses and financial burdens.
The most common regrets include maintenance costs, repairs, and mortgage payments. Many homebuyers underestimated the ongoing expenses of homeownership, with some reporting that post-purchase costs were higher than expected. Buying a house that's too small was the second most common regret, cited by 21% of respondents.
A separate survey found that space issues can arise quickly, with nearly half of Americans feeling cramped in their home within a year of moving in. High mortgage payments and overpaying for the house were also among the top complaints.
Regrets varied by age group, with older homeowners more likely to regret high maintenance costs due to owning older homes. Younger generations, like millennials, were more likely to regret taking on high mortgage payments and rates.
Despite these regrets, a majority of homeowners reported having no second thoughts about their purchase. In fact, 70% said they would buy their current home again if given the chance, with nearly 60% of homeowners between 61-79 years old expressing no regrets at all.
