Standard Chartered acted as Mandated Lead Arranger and structured the senior secured project financing for a significant portfolio of large battery energy storage system (BEES) projects in Germany. This financing is earmarked for the development and construction of the projects. The portfolio comprises eleven grid-connected large battery storage systems with a cumulative capacity of approximately 790 MW.
The projects are being developed by TotalEnergies Renewables Deutschland GmbH through its subsidiary Kyon Energy Solutions GmbH. Allianz Global Investors holds a 50 per cent stake in the project holding company. The geographically diverse portfolio covers sites across Germany and includes facilities already under construction as well as those ready for construction. Commissioning of the first projects is expected in 2026.
Structured Financing and Market Importance
The financing is based on structured tolling agreements. These agreements ensure a high proportion of contractually secured revenues and enable precise planning of cash flows. Such investment structures create the conditions for sustainable long-term financing of the entire portfolio by providing predictability and stability, which are essential for large-scale infrastructure projects of this type.
Battery storage systems are becoming increasingly important within modern electricity systems. Their primary function is to balance electricity generation and consumption, mitigate price volatility, and increase systemic flexibility. This is particularly relevant in the context of the continuous growth of renewable electricity generation. By storing energy and making it available on demand, these systems support a more efficient and reliable integration of renewable energies on a large scale.

This is crucial at a stage where the flexibility of electricity systems plays an increasingly important role. With the progressive increase in renewable electricity generation, investments are essential to make electricity systems more reliable, efficient, and suitable for large-scale operation.
