After more than 25 years in family ownership, director Steven Spielberg and his wife, actress Kate Capshaw, have brought their equestrian estate in Sullivan Canyon, Los Angeles, onto the market. The asking price for the property known as Dogwood is 29.9 million dollars. The couple acquired the approximately 2.8-acre site in 1999 for 5.75 million dollars.
Originally, an extensive expansion was planned, which included a five-storey, 27,000-square-foot indoor riding arena and capital expenditure of more than 7 million dollars. After local residents voiced concerns, these plans were abandoned. Nevertheless, the expansive grounds established themselves over subsequent decades as a private haven for the couple's horses.
Architecture and living comfort in Sullivan Canyon
The estate spans two separate parcels amidst a stand of mature oak trees. Architect Michael Kovac was responsible for designing the 6,219-square-foot main residence, with interior design by Michael Smith and gardens by Christine London. Generous living and dining areas featuring walnut timber floors and fine plaster walls open directly to the outdoor spaces, offering views across the canyon.
The kitchen features an informal dining nook and a wood-burning fireplace, opening into a family room. This connects to an ipe wood terrace adjoining a reflecting pool. The lower ground floor accommodates a media and games area as well as a walk-in wine cellar. In total, the property provides seven bedrooms and eleven bathrooms.
Professional equestrian infrastructure
The core of the estate comprises dedicated equestrian facilities occupying the majority of the grounds:
- —Main stable with six stalls, office, staff quarters, feed room, and three grooming bays
- —Riding arena of approximately 20,000 square feet with a mirrored wall and separate viewing platform
- —Second barn on the lower parcel with four stalls and roughly 5,400 square feet of turnout space
- —Guest house with its own bedroom, kitchen, roof terrace, and lower-level office
The total capacity of the estate is ten horse stalls. A dedicated security centre and parking facilities for more than ten vehicles complete the property. Dogwood presents prospective owners with the rare opportunity to maintain a fully equipped equestrian facility in one of Los Angeles's most discreet locations.
