Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH and travel retail specialist Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co. KG have contractually extended their existing collaboration, thereby laying the groundwork for the expansion of duty-free and travel value areas at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). This development concerns the security area of Terminal 1, where the shopping offer for travellers is to be significantly expanded.

The plans envisage a far-reaching redesign and enlargement of the marketplace behind security control in Terminal 1. Development is set to commence in autumn 2026. As part of these measures, the existing retail space will be expanded to approximately 3,800 square metres. This includes not only an expanded shopping offer but also the integration of a new catering area. This catering area will offer a direct view of the apron and is designed to complement the shopping experience.

Improving the Passenger Experience

The revised concept for the marketplace includes additional elements to enhance passenger comfort. These comprise extra seating for waiting passengers, an optimisation of flight information, and a redesigned children's play area. The catering area will allow passengers to linger in close proximity to the duty-free and travel value shops and observe airport operations, thus creating an attractive place to stay that combines shopping, gastronomy, and the airport experience.

The renovation work is planned in several construction phases and is expected to be completed by the end of 2028. It is assured that passenger and retail operations will be maintained without restriction throughout the entire construction period. This ensures that airport operations can continue unimpeded.

Aletta von Massenbach, Chairwoman of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, emphasised that with Gebr. Heinemann, they are investing in the future and consistently developing the heart of Terminal 1. The aim is to create more space to linger, expand the offering, and open up the area more towards the apron through the redesign, thereby noticeably improving the travel experience at BER. Florian Seidel, Chief Sales Officer at Gebr. Heinemann, highlighted that the extension of the partnership is a sign of mutual trust and underscores Gebr. Heinemann's commitment to developing retail concepts that are tailored to the needs of travellers. The expansion at BER offers the opportunity to realise a future-oriented shopping world with a range of products specifically customised for passengers, greater comfort, and an overall improved travel experience.
