Over half of parents who charge rent to their adult children living at home repay this amount, either fully or partially. This is done to help the children save for a deposit on a property. This insight comes from a study by Nationwide Building Society.

The study, involving more than 2,000 parents, reveals a widespread practice of financial support. According to the findings, 54 percent of the surveyed parents use rent payments as a savings mechanism to promote their children's homeownership ambitions. This method allows young adults to accumulate capital for purchasing their own homes, without having to bear the full financial burden of rent.

Strategic Financial Aid for Offspring

This approach underscores the challenges young people face in accumulating sufficient capital for a deposit. Given rising property prices and the need for substantial savings, family support often becomes a decisive factor for entering the property market.

The results of the Nationwide survey suggest a creative solution by which families can ease the financial burden while simultaneously fostering a sense of responsibility in their children. By initially collecting rent and then setting it aside for a specific purpose, children gain a structured way to save, while also experiencing the realities of housing costs.

This trend could, in the long term, help to facilitate access to homeownership for a younger generation who would otherwise struggle to overcome the high entry barriers of the market. Parental support thus proves to be an important pillar in realising the dream of owning a home.
