Fraport AG has awarded building services specialist Caverion another major contract for the fit-out of the newly built Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport. The company is acting as general contractor for the key trades of plumbing, heating, cooling, ventilation, and sprinkler systems. The contract value for this fit-out phase is in the low double-digit million range.
The project covers the head building at Pier G, which functions as a central operational area and is currently being fully fitted out. The three-storey structure comprises a gross floor area of around 22,000 square metres. Once completed, the building will primarily serve passenger handling. In addition, capacity for up to 100 office workstations is being created within the space.
Complex operating conditions in the security area
The construction work is taking place under demanding conditions, as all measures must be carried out during ongoing flight operations. As Jürgen Wüsteney, Head of Large Projects at Caverion, explains, working in the airport security area requires comprehensive security checks for personnel and goods multiple times a day. Furthermore, roughly a third of the installation work is being carried out during the night.
For Caverion, the contract builds on previous work at Terminal 3. The company was already significantly involved in the installation of building services across several trades at the main building as well as at Piers G and J.
Technical specifications and schedule
The technical equipment of the head building includes substantial performance capacity to ensure daily operations. While the required heating capacity is drawn directly from existing facilities, the new installation incorporates specific large-scale components:
- —Two chillers, each with a cooling capacity of one megawatt
- —Four air handling units providing a total air flow rate of 130,000 cubic metres per hour
- —Installation of a total of 7,000 sprinkler heads for fire protection
Installation work by Caverion has been underway since October 2026. The completion of the building services installations at Pier G is scheduled for late 2028.
