Billionaire Ken Griffin is making a US$3 billion donation to Carnegie Mellon University, with US$2 billion earmarked for the construction of a significant new campus in Miami's Wynwood district. According to an announcement from Carnegie Mellon, this represents the largest single donation by an individual to a higher education institution. Griffin will also donate US$1 billion to the university's Pittsburgh campus and join its Board of Trustees.

Details of the New Campus

The Miami campus will span 35 acres and focus on computer science, artificial intelligence, robotics, and other technology sectors. Carnegie Mellon anticipates the campus will eventually support over 3,500 undergraduate, master's, and PhD students, nearly 300 faculty members, and more than 600 staff, as noted in the announcement. Construction is planned to commence next year, with the first students expected in 2028.

The university acquired the site from Miami developer Moishe Mana for an undisclosed price. However, it was not revealed who will ultimately hold the title to the property. The project represents Carnegie Mellon's largest expansion outside its Pittsburgh base. Currently, the university operates smaller satellite campuses in New York City, Mountain View, California, and Qatar.

The programme in Miami will concentrate on areas such as human health, national security, energy and climate resilience, advanced manufacturing, and industrial transformation. These aspects will be closely intertwined with AI, computing technology, and machine learning. Griffin stated that the graduates and technology companies attracted to Miami to leverage these skills will transform the fabric of Miami for decades, if not centuries.

Griffin's Commitment to Wynwood

This campus deepens Griffin's commitment to Wynwood. Previously, in partnership with Goldman Properties, he acquired a nearby office tower from Sterling Bay for US$180 million. This building houses MIAX Sapphire's 38,400-square-foot options trading floor, alongside PwC, Gensler, and Sony Music. According to the announcement, Griffin has now donated US$2.4 billion in South Florida and more than US$5.7 billion overall.

  • —Total donation from Ken Griffin to Carnegie Mellon University: US$3 billion.
  • —Share for the Miami campus: US$2 billion.
  • —Size of the Miami campus: 35 acres.
  • —Planned construction start: Next year, first students from 2028.

The new campus also follows Stephen Ross's endeavour to establish Vanderbilt University's planned postgraduate campus in West Palm Beach. This further expands the higher education and technology ecosystem in South Florida.
