Harrisburg mayoral hopeful vows to settle outstanding property tax debts

Dauphin County records reveal tax debt for two Harrisburg mayoral candidates.

L
amont Jones, a Harrisburg City Council member and mayoral candidate, owes $573 in 2023 real estate taxes and $2,054 for 2024 on his row house on North 16th Street. Dauphin County tax records show the back taxes are listed as delinquent on the Tax Claims website. A Facebook post referencing Jones' tax situation was made by a supporter of Mayor Wanda Williams, who is running for re-election against four Democrat candidates, including Jones.

Jones claims he intends to pay the taxes before his property goes to Sheriff's sale and attributes the Facebook post to an attack by a Williams supporter. He says paying his taxes takes time due to his limited income of $20,000 per year, making him "a regular person." Jones also notes that he has invested heavily in restoring the vacant property, which had various liens.

According to tax officials, real estate taxes become delinquent when not paid within a calendar year and are listed publicly each February. Delinquent properties are listed for Sheriff's sale if unpaid by June 30 of the second year they are delinquent. Jones has until June 30 to pay his 2023 taxes and until June 30, 2026, to pay his 2024 tax balance.

Jones believes the Facebook post will "backfire" and expects an exciting outcome in Tuesday's primary election, where he faces off against Williams, city Treasurer Dan Miller, community activist Tone Cook Jr., and Lewis Butts Jr. Record checks by PennLive found no other candidates owed delinquent real estate taxes.
