STRABAG Australia and ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau, both subsidiaries of STRABAG SE, have been awarded a contract for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) infrastructure project in Melbourne, Australia. This involvement marks the STRABAG Group's first significant project entry into the Australian market. The SRL project is designed to reform the state of Victoria's public transport network by creating a 90-kilometre orbital railway line.
The new railway line is intended to establish an integral connection between Melbourne's main train routes. The aim is to optimise accessibility to workplaces, medical facilities, educational institutions, and the regional hinterland for passengers. ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau is focusing on the SRL East section of the construction, which will be entirely underground. This sector will construct a 26-kilometre twin-tunnel connection between the suburbs of Cheltenham and Box Hill.
Construction work for SRL East began in 2022; the planned commissioning is scheduled for 2035. ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau contributes specific expertise, many years of experience, and technical equipment to this project, particularly for the construction of approximately 30 cross-passages. The ground freezing method will be used for this. The contract was awarded by the Suburban Connect consortium, which consists of the companies CPB, Ghella, and Acciona.
STRABAG subsidiary STRABAG Australia will also be supported by the Georgiou Group in carrying out this work for SRL East. This subsidiary has expertise in local infrastructure construction and thus complements the project's resources. Jörg Löffler, Managing Director of ZÜBLIN Spezialtiefbau GmbH, commented on this engagement. He emphasised that this first contract in Australia represents a significant milestone for the company and provides a basis for developing further market opportunities in specialist foundation engineering in Australia.
The Suburban Rail Loop project is of strategic importance for expanding the STRABAG subsidiaries' presence in a market considered essential. The SRL East connection is a central component of the overall project, designed to significantly increase the efficiency and capacity of public transport in Melbourne. The underground routing of the tunnel system also relieves pressure on above-ground areas and supports urban development.
