Surrey Estates Breaks Manhattan Luxury Contract Records

Luxury condo atop Surrey Hotel sells for record price in Manhattan.

A
luxurious condo in the Surrey Hotel, a storied address that once hosted President John F. Kennedy and Bette Davis, has sold for a record-breaking price in Manhattan. The 5,000-square-foot unit at 20 East 76th Street, which boasts three bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a spacious terrace, was last asking $24 million. This sale tops the borough's luxury deals between October 14 and 20, according to Olshan Realty's weekly report.

The Surrey Residences, comprising 14 condos above the hotel, have been generating buzz since launching sales earlier this fall. Another six-bedroom unit in the building sold for $28 million in September. The development offers a range of amenities, including a concierge, spa, fitness center, and rooftop terrace, as well as access to Casa Tua, a private members' club and Italian restaurant.

The Surrey Hotel itself was acquired by British billionaires Simon and David Reuben's company, the Reuben Brothers, in 2020 for $150 million. The hotel had filed for bankruptcy earlier that year along with its ground lease holder, Ashkenazy Acquisitions.

In related news, a 3,000-square-foot condo at Related Companies' West Chelsea development, the Cortland, was the second most expensive home to land a signed contract last week. This unit features four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and stunning views of the Hudson River. The building offers a range of amenities, including doormen, a fitness center, golf simulator, pool, and rooftop terrace.

Sales at the Cortland launched in June 2022, with 49 inked deals by the end of the year, making it Manhattan's top-selling building with fewer than 200 units. The number of deals last week was down from 28 in the previous period, but buyers still signed contracts for 19 homes asking $4 million or more, on par with the same week last year.
